Calabasas Mobile Park Gets a Makeover

The gateway to Calabasas Village Mobile Estates will soon look sharp.

Calabasas Village and the City of Calabasas hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 8 to celebrate the start of a longawaited landscaping improvement project in the 23700 block of Mulholland Highway.

The joint beautification venture between the city and the owner of Calabasas Village will consist of landscaping approximately 2,400 feet of public property fronting the mobile home park.

The $250,000 enhancement funded by Calabasas Crest Ltd., owner of the mobile home park, will include more than 200 trees and native plants. The work began earlier this month and will be completed in about three months.

“We’re delighted to be doing this,” said Lawrence Rosenthal of Calabasas Crest Ltd. “We’ve always liked being part of Calabasas, and we’re happy to help with its beautification… .

“This will enhance the aesthetics for our residents and for people who drive by,” Rosenthal said.

The city will lease the public right of way to Calabasas Crest Ltd. for $1 a year.

“This was a challenging area because it was being used for illegal parking and dumping,” Calabasas Mayor Mary Sue Maurer said.

Longtime Calabasas Village resident Skip Corder, who has been on the board of directors for the community of 201 mobile homes, said waste companies have been using the vacant area to transfer trash from dumpsters to their trucks. Cars and school buses also park on the dirt lot, creating dust for nearby residents.

“In the middle of the night trucks come and dump all kinds of garbage,” said Corder, whose home abuts Mulholland Highway.

City Manager Tony Coroalles said truck drivers would also spend the night in the lot.

“Every time somebody pulled into the dirt area it would create a cloud of dust,” Coroalles said.

The strip of dirt and sand will be turned it into a “beautiful garden area for the people to come home to,” Maurer said.

In addition to providing attractive and environmentally sensitive landscaping, the development will include a pathway that can be enjoyed by everyone, Maurer said.

Resident Debbie Nierenberg said she looks forward to the enhancement in her community.

“Driving home and seeing the beauty when we come in is going to be so refreshing. It will make people feel a lot better,” she said.

The improvements will also increase local property values, Nirenberg said.

Mobile homes in the village are independently owned, but residents lease the land that they’re on.

The six-bedroom, seven-bathroom home on 2.4 acres was marketed as a short sale. Chestnut paid $3.3 million for the property in 2007, public records show.
